BREAKING NEWS: OOCL vessel topples container crane at Port of Kaohsiung, Taiwan

OOCL vessel

Early this morning, a massive container vessel operated by Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) docked at Port of Kaohsiung, and toppled an un-boomed container crane. The crane sent debris raining down after crashing on the containers.

Clearly unaware that the vessel was too close to the dock, OOCL’s ship scraped another vessel while docking. Port workers were alarmed at the loud scraping inflicted on the vessel which subsequently sent the crane falling inwards onto the bulk of containers with 2 engineers onboard. The containers toppled on impact and sent workers fleeing for their lives.

The trapped engineers were successfully rescued via a 60m mast-type jib crane. While no major injuries were reported, the engineers onboard the collapsed crane were traumatised from the incident.
